Project Description

Land and water resources are under pressure due to population growth, economic development and changing climatic conditions - The LUCCI project is developing strategies for sustainable water and land uses in Central Vietnam considering the regional socio- economic development, national planning aspects as well as climate change predictions, GHG emission estimates, potential carbon sinks and natural land and water resources.

LUCCI catalyzes interdisciplinary research of German and Vietnamese partners in close collaboration with the national institutions and the provincial and local stakeholders in order to improve the understanding of the interactions between natural resources, environmental services and climate in the context of land and water uses.

The Vu Gia Thu Bon river basin (VGTB) in Central Vietnam serves as case study and is investigated as a proxy for the whole Central Vietnamese region. The interdisciplinary research applies both natural and social science approaches and focuses on analyzing the impacts of different land use systems and land cover change on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on the one hand and climate change impacts on existing land and water uses as well as on the human and natural environment on the other.

After developing land and water resources use scenarios for 2050 under different climatic and socioeconomic development conditions, strategies will be derived and suggested to the National and local authorities.
